When it comes to snacking on fruit, blueberries are pretty much superstars. Though I do not love them on their own they are an incredible addition to oatmeal, cereal, yogurt, smoothies, and fruit crumbles.
Will they make me fat?
Nope! Blueberries may taste quite sweet, but are low on the glycemic index. Unlike other high sugar fruit like grapes and bananas, blueberries get metabolized slowly so our bodies get to use much of the sugar as energy instead of being stored as fat.
*ihart tip #1- if you are eating blueberries on their own, pair them with a couple almonds/other raw nuts to bring down the glycemic index. (i.e. your body will use even more of the food’s calories as energy)
Put simply antioxidants rid the body of harmful substances in toxins. A.K.A if you smoke, drink alcohol, eat deep fried foods, are exposed to fumes from cars, etc. you definitely want to be consuming foods high in antioxidants.
*ihart tip #2– opt for organic blueberries, they have way more antioxidants than conventional blueberries.
Blueberries rank as one of the highest forms of foods containing anti oxidants. So eat up and stay healthy!
Because cooking damages nutrients found in foods it is best to eat blueberries raw, or frozen (great for smoothies!)
