5 Tips to Relieve Seasonal Allergies

Jordana

Posted on August 15th, 2012

Over the past couple years I have been experiencing seasonal summer allergies. Very normal. Very annoying. But bottom line, I totally DO NOT hart allergies.    They are quite mild, but I do have this annoying itchy feeling at the back of my throat, and my sister often complains that I make weird and terribly unattractive facial expressions where I use my tongue to itch the back of my mouth…nobody else gets that? Any help here? Okay, needless it say…it is NOT OK.   On the quest to stop hopelessly relieving the itch at the back of my throat I have learned that the summer heat, humidity, pollen, weeds, and pollution are all culprits causing me allergy symptoms.      5 tips for…

Vanilla Almond Blueberry Smoothie

Jordana

Posted on August 8th, 2012

Following my morning spin class, I came home and decided to replenish my body with a smoothie.   I used a Vega Energizing Smoothie as my base and then added some of my own ingredients! Really you can simply add water to the mix and enjoy, but I wanted to spice things up a little!   For the base, I chose the Vanilla Almond Flavour, which I had yet to try (it is a brand new product!). The base alone has 2 servings of veggies, 10 grams of protein, fibre, and omega fats.   What i hart about the Vega brand is that it is totally natural and vegan. The beauty of a smoothie is that it’s liquid form allows for easy and quick absorption of…

How to Shop Fresh and Healthy

Jordana

Posted on August 1st, 2012

Visiting fresh markets in Toronto has definitely become one of my latest favorite pastimes. Thanks to my friend Mia, I recently came across the incredible Sorauren farmer’s market. It is only open on Mondays from 3-7 pm and I recommend stopping by this summer.

This market is particularly special because it offers an assortment of fresh fruits & vegetables, meats, fish, smoothies, pastries, and premade foods. In addition, there is a large selection of organic produce.

Augie’s Gourmet makes fresh “Ice Pops” made with only the freshest of ingredients: fruits, herbs, and a little bit of organic cane sugar. I tasted a mini version of an Ice Pop: Watermelon Lemon Mint…..beyond tasty and refreshing.

Kind Organics is a company located in Southern Ontario just north of Toronto. They produce yummy sprouts, salad greens, and edible flowers that are great for salads, sandwiches and bean salads. ( I have seen this brand at Whole Foods)

Pure maple syrup…. peace out Aunt Jemima

All of the yummy goodies made at “Earth & City” are created by two young ladies. I purchased the kale Garlic Scape Pesto…..to die for!

Chocosol’s Amazing Coffee

Below there are a few pictures of fresh fruits. I purchased red and crunchy “lady prince apples” which I have yet to spot in grocery stores.

Many of the vendors offered tons of greens! I opted for fresh kale and leeks.

The garlic scape season starts and ends in June, but I was lucky to find one of the last bunches of these at the market. I made a delicious garlic spread to be used on crackers, steak, fish, and pasta!

Unfortunately, I failed to take a picture of the stand where I purchased my sheeps milk cheese. I was far too busy freaking out about how fresh and mouth watering their cheeses were. I purchased sheeps milk cheese that was absolutely heavenly. I am a huge sucker for cheese, but this one is very tolerable for those sensitive to lactose.

My caprese salads:

Version 1- Made using 1 large tomato

Version 2- Made using an assortment of cherry tomatoes and vine ripe tomatoes

Caprese Salad Recipe:

1 large sliced tomato/ or an assortment of vine and cherry tomatoes

Bunch of fresh basil

Sheeps milk cheese

1 tbsp of balsamic

1 tsp of olive oil

Salt and pepper

Easy procedure: slice up the tomatoes and cheese and top with fresh basil. Drizzle olive oil and balsamic on top and add a pinch of salt and pepper!
