Stay Skinny at Starbucks- PART I

Jordana

Posted on March 27th, 2012

Let’s get it all out on the table→ Starbucks, our second home, the place we have come to know and love, is not healthy. But simmer down, for ihartnutrition still supports Starbucks. It’s kind of a love/hate relationship, and just like everything else, it is something that should be consumed in moderation.   We all know Starbucks is for hotties. Let’s be real-you look way hotter rocking a Venti Starbucks than an extra extra large Tim Horton’s coffee. Want to look even hotter? Rock Starbucks the healthier way, with the help of ihart tips.   In the ihartnutrition world you have to be mindful when you order:   While you may think it is absolutely imperative that you order the grande or venti latte, let’s…

Smoothie 101

Jordana

Posted on March 23rd, 2012

Smoothies are one of the top 5 ways to get healthy FAST. The nutrients are easily absorbed and you can throw in tons of healthy ingredients. Smoothies can be consumed as a meal or a snack, and are excellent to have post work out.   Frozen Berries (1/2 cup or more)→ blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries *no need to include more than 1/2 a banana.   Liquid (¾ cup or more) →water, almond milk, hemp milk, coconut water.   Nut butter (1 tsp) →peanut, almond, sesame.   Protein (15-30 grams) → protein powder or greek yogurt.   Greens (handful) →spinach, kale. OKAY… PAUSE. I know what you must be thinking “ew that’s gross”. I was a skeptic once too. However; I promise you do not…

A Quick Pick Me Up

Jordana

Posted on March 21st, 2012

This morning I panicked. I had no coffee left. Life as I knew it  had come to an end. Devastating…I know.   That’s when it hit me, why don’t I have a green juice for a boost of energy. Juices, unlike smoothies, are void of dietary fiber. This means your body does not have to breakdown fiber and the nutrients can be absorbed  immediately.   SunWarrior’s Ormus Super Greens are full of alfalfa, barley, wheat and oat grass, parsley, spinach, and more.     Benefits of a Green Juice: Improves energy Detoxifying Encourages weight loss Simplifies daily leafy green requirement Improves intestinal health Promotes alkalinity Supports immune system Simple Recipe: 1 cup of pure water ½ cup of coconut water (natural sweet electrolyte)…

Go Green or Go Home

Jordana

Posted on March 16th, 2012

Just a few of my fave greens in honour of St Pattys Day.   Kale- Helps to play a detoxification role in the body. Be sure to stock up –your body will thank you for this natural detox remedy after you guzzle a few too many beers on Saturday. Lightly steam it to maximize its nutritional benefits.   Spinach- The vitamin K in one cup of fresh spinach has almost 200% of your daily value. Vitamin K is important for bone health, and prevents excessive bleeding by promoting blood clotting.   Cucumber- Cucumbers are the 4th most widely cultivated vegetable in the world. They are 95% water- So if you are not an avid water drinking, say hello to cucumbers!   Avocados- Not only…

fat free makes you fat

Jordana

Posted on March 14th, 2012

I hope by now you have all read the rules section of my blog. I want to dig a little deeper into commandment # 3- “Though shall not eat non fat and fat free” (this refers to packaged and processed foods).   There is a growing trend of fat free and low fat products in North America. Eating food without feeling guilty- I mean seriously, what could be better?   The problem is, when fat is removed from a product, it has to be replaced by something else. And this something else is often SUGAR. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but sugar, just like fat, will make you fat! Yes, fat. I said it! Our bodies only use a tiny bit…

It’s all about H2O babe

Jordana

Posted on March 13th, 2012

Though drinking water seems like common sense, it is something the majority of individuals are lacking. Ironically, though water is free, calorie free, and easily accessible it is often ignored.   There is not a single bodily function- from laughing, walking, to thinking that operates without the help of water. Over 60% of our bodies are made up of water, and it is a substance every creature on earth depends on for survival. The easiest way to get healthy is to start drinking more water. Ya, it seems basic but if you drink at least 5 glasses of water a day you will rapidly experience the results.   more reasons to become an h20 babe Important for joints Regulates digestion Serves as a…

strawberry, blueberry, banana muffins

Jordana

Posted on March 12th, 2012

Okay, not gonna lie pretty annoyed with myself right now. I have a tendency to make up recipes and not write down the recipe measurements. I just made amazingly delicious nutrient dense muffins- with no recipe to share I really try to avoid using white or even whole wheat flour in baking. White flour is void of nutrients, where as whole wheat flour is kinda gross (in my opinion). Many recipes call for a ridiculous amount of oil or butter. A trick to reduce these unnecessary proportions is to simply reduce them by including apple sauce and yogurt in baked recipes.     Here are some of the ingredients  I used:   oats- high in fiber, and balances blood sugar spelt flour- easy to absorb brown rice…

Jordana

Posted on March 12th, 2012

Is waking up in the morning torture? Do you not consider yourself a “person” until you consume your morning coffee? Do you often experience a late afternoon slump? If this is the case you are seriously in need of a diet makeover.

Incorporate these 5 foods into your diet and fight fatigue:

  1. Goji berries- a “superfood” which contains amino acids, essential fatty acids and 12 trace minerals
  2. Spinach- increases energy production, promotes concentration, and prevents headaches
  3. Salmon- full of healthy omega 3 fats, and vitamins that improve mood and cognition
  4. Pumpkin seeds- rich in magnesium which fights fatigue
  5. Kale- one of the healthiest foods available that balances blood sugar levels to keep you alert all day long without a crash!

are you healthy?

Jordana

Posted on March 10th, 2012

So for my first blog post, let’s make this short and sweet:   Healthy is NOT: Low fat Fat free Packaged Processed Fried ……..you get the idea   While this next answer is not all encompassing,   Healthy IS: Anything whole from mother nature (fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, etc.) With that being said use your discretion and always strive for balanced meals and eat even “healthy” foods in moderation!
